The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
The Poisonwood Bible
By: Barbara Kingsolver
The Poisonwood Bible is an excellent tale of a missionary family that moves from a rural South Carolina to the middle of the Congo. The book is told through the 4 children and their mother as their father has not regard for their feelings as he tries to impose the “Christian” way onto the small village in the Congo.
The story is excellent because you feel like you know these 5 women as they change over the years from helpless to strong women. You feel like you actually know these women and their inner feelings as they tell through their own words about life in the Congo.
This book also goes a great job of historically describing what was going on in the Congo and African during the 1950’s. I learned a lot about the Congo and this time period from reading this excellent book.
- Did you know Scojo got their start with a portion of proceeds that went to third world countries, providing reading glasses to those that needed them for survival? They trained local women to be entrepreneurs and "brought sight within arms reach". Bravo Scojo!
