A lifetime Experience Of EyeGlasses

I have worn eyeglasses since I was five years old (I'm 49 now). Over the years I have seen the fashions change. Unfortunately due to the thickness of my lenses I'm very limited to the style of frames I can wear.  If I wear large frames the outer portion of the lenses is very large (thick like coke bottles), however at this age, multi-focal lenses are necessary and the small frames that are in style now do not work well for multi-focal lenses. Some of the clean line designs, such as Scojo frames are the styles I personally prefer.

For many years I worked as an optician and I have to admit some of the frames that people chose baffled me.  The older women were especially funny as they would choose the flashiest styles. I guess having worn glasses all my life I preferred to wear ones that weren't that noticable but some of these women wanted glasses that were large, brightly colored and with rhinestones decorating them.

And then of course we had to put the gold or silver initials in the corner.  The funniest ones were the ladies who would choose the light blue (almost silver) frames and then want the lenses tinted to match the frame (a light blue). They would then come back and complain that the tint wasn't doing anything as far as protection from the sun. Well, duh. For that you actually need a pair of regular or reading sunglasses that offer full UVA and UVB protection.

Working with people and helping them choose their glasses, and then dealing with their complaints about how the glasses turned out (especially when you tried to warn them that what they were choosing really wouldn't look that good with their prescription), was one of the most stressful jobs I have ever had.

That's why I like the concept of over the counter designer reading glasses. They are affordable enough that people can have multiple pairs to match their style preference or mood. Even they are not the perfect pair for their needs, who cares? They are a fun accessory designed to help near vision.
