24 Before I Realised I Needed Glasses
I was 24 before I found out that the world was not actually an impressionist painting. This discovery was occasioned by my first eye exam when I could not read the E on top of the chart.
The opthomologist's only comment was that he hoped I was not driving and if I were, he wanted to know when I was leaving. My glasses were both a revelation and a curse (nevermind being a great step forward in personal safety) since I could see, but was astonished to find that all my friends looked much older.
This did not thrill my friends. I love my glasses though, since the world I lost is restored to me by the simple act of taking them off. I have the best of both worlds. I also prefer them to contacts since they are a simple and elegant solution to this age-old problem and cheap, to boot!
