For the most part, people didn’t know what to make of you. You somehow made your mix-and-match vintage corsets work with your antique lace skirts. And your shoes! Your shoes were straight out of the Victorian era. If they weren’t Converse high tops, that is.
You worked at the thrift shop when you weren’t auditioning. Which wasn’t very often. But you made up for it by entertaining yourself at work. You’d make a game of using different voices when customers came in. The woman buying the cameo brooch might get your “Southern Belle”, while the man checking out the antique pocketknife might get “Jersey Girl”. You didn’t know beforehand which part you’d be playing. It depended on the color of Reade Street reading glasses you wore that day.
It was slow, so you were re-hanging clothes when a youngish-looking yuppie walked in. You knew his face, but you couldn’t quite place him. He looked to be around your age. You greeted him with your best “English Royalty”. He responded with the exact same accent.
Then went on to say, “Odd. I thought you were from New Jersey.” You stumbled momentarily, then your acting training kicked in. You were about to tell him that he had the wrong girl when he burst into laughter, and as American as he could be, says, “Just kidding. I think I got you, though! I just came by to see what the color of the day was.”
It happened to be Foxy Lady Red. Yesterday it was Green Frost, and tomorrow maybe you’d feel like wearing your Freezerblu pair. Your Reade Street glasses are so sparkly cool that no matter what color you wear, you got attention. Now if you could just get a part.
